October 4 Worship

Drawing from the classic Twilight Zone episode "The Howling Man," this dialogue sermon explores how evil presents itself not as an obvious threat but as something sympathetic, reasonable, and deserving of compassion. Through the story of David Ellington, who releases a prisoner he believes to be unjustly held -- only to discover the prisoner is Satan itself -- the congregation examines how humanity misidentifies temptation, misplaces empathy, and removes the staff of truth from its rightful place. The sermon challenges believers to interrogate their own perceptions, question what they accept as truth, and recognize that evil thrives not by threatening us but by persuading us. Faith, discernment, and a commitment to truth -- even when emotion pulls in the opposite direction -- are presented as the essential tools for resisting the forces that work against peace, love, and human dignity.
