A Brief History

AlterBethel opened its doors in 1952. It has continually sought to be a light in the San Fernando Valley. Bethel has a history of being socially conscious, and spiritually sound.

Bethel has deep historical connections with Lutheran Social Services and has consistently believed that God has called us to act in matters of peace and social justice.

Alongside its social action, Bethel has always been a place that believed in creativity and expression as a way to worship God. Through the years Bethel has had numerous singing and performing groups like the renown “Life Assurance Company” and is now the home of Theatre Encino, Encino’s only community theatre.

Bethel has been blessed with many great pastors including our Pastor Blacka who spearheaded deep spiritual health and growth both at Bethel and in the valley, and Pastor Steward who helped Bethel in our crisis and helped us discern how to thrive.

In December of 2008, we called Pastor Rustin Comer and his wife Heather Sheffield-Comer to come and lead our congregation. Pastor Rustin is soon to have his Ph.D in Ethics, Theology, and Culture. He firmly believes that Bethel is a community with a rich and wonderful future. A future that he and Heather are excited to be a part of.
